Are you by any chance using or have enabled 2FA (two-factor-authorization) ?
If yes, which one ?

This has changed to Multi-Factor authorization in Joomla 4.2 and may need a look at your settings:
www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5865-joomla-4-2-release.html

Best is to make a site clone and check any needed setting changes it before updating the live site.

I have a 2FA setup for the administration but not for the front-end members.

Do you think that would still cause a conflict?

I'll create a clone and try turning it off and updating again.

Please provide your configuration for Multi-factor Authentication within Users > Manage > Options. Probably some with the new MFA implementation not working right with CB.

Have confirmed MFA is not working with CB. A fix is being worked on and should be available sometime today.

This is now fixed in latest CB build release. We'll also be preparing a stable release for next week for those not using build releases. CB now supports both the old 2FA and the new MFA.
