So there is still no problem since trashed messages do not use any resources. Each message is only stored once in the database (doesn't matter if it is in the inbox, outbox, archive or trash).
So having a dozens of messages (or millions of them) in the trash might be a little bit unclear but no problem at all.
If you don't like this behaviour, switch the trash off (in the background it still exists and the rest of the purge logic does not change).
