Well, I can figure out what is going on here.
I've tried with all settings in the UddeIM (2.9), but I can't make it work either on my running site or my test site.
I don't see an error except if I 'force load' mootools.
If I use the test line in the FAQ I see names returned as I should.

When it was an update (not changing the Joomla version), nothing has changed. Only on Joomla 3.0 there is a new autocompleter available.

"Force load" is never a good idea when Joomla uses its own library, too. That may lead into conflicts and is a legacy option from Joomla 1.0.

Ok, so I guess we'll have to wait until J3.X, which won't happen until Kunena gets their software updated :-)
I don't see any errors, so I'm a bit stuck until then.
