We used to be able to do this... I haven't needed to do this for a few years, but today I do.
Have various categories for paid users, and occasionally we add publicly accessible articles to them as well.
We currently have dozens of these, which are still fully readable by our 'free' users, and even public not logged in.

Today I went to add one, and do not see the interface anymore. Where has it gone?
Used to be ( I thought!) in the plan settings - Integration Tab | Content, we had a section to exempt items from the user plan protection.
Can't seem to find it now anywhere... though as I mentioned, updates over the years have not adversely affected articles that were previously exempted ( they are listed in protected categories, but viewable by public when clicked on...)

There is no individual article exemption functionality. Only exemption feature is selecting usergroups that are completely exempt from all protections in CBSubs > Settings > Integrations > Content/Extensions. If you need an article that's public and not protected by CBSubs I suggest placing it in a category CBSubs isn't protecting. Another option is adjusting "Still show intro text for articles" so the article Intro is still visible then put all your free content in the intro (this might be what you're already doing with those existing articles?).
