Now that is strange, have I turned this facility off somewhere maybe. See the attached after a search.

It can't be turned off. It's entirely based off the length of the URL during a search being less than 2083 characters. This is set based off the maximum allowed by internet explorer, which today probably isn't as relevant and this can be increased now. Chrome for example has a maximum limit of over 100,000. We'll probably need to do a simple useragent test and just handle this per browser roughly.

Amazing, thanks Kyle. I have only one option selected in that search, or does the search take every field into consideration and mark un selected as null?

For the redirect it only considers search inputs actually used. Note it works off non-SEF URL so it could be a lot longer than what you're seeing with SEF on. The redirect behavior can be found in the below.

IN: components\com_comprofiler\comprofiler.html.php
ON: Line 528 - 538

You can var_dump( $pagingUrl ) to see what it would redirect to. You can also var_dump( strlen( $pagingUrl ) ) to see how long it is. As long as its length is less than 2083 and a search is being made it should cause the redirect.
