Yup that's possible. Create a Custom HTML field then under parameters enable Joomla content plugins. You can then use the below Joomla usage to render a module as a field.

Custom HTML fields have no storage behavior. So it isn't adding anything to your database beyond its entry in _comprofiler_fields and you can potentially have unlimited Custom HTML fields. No there is no other means of adding modules to profiles.
