Thanks to your great help, I did some tests ...
I found that disabling the option in the component K2 -> Advanced ->
Integration with Community Builder for avatars, user names and user pages
disabled
everything works fine without the need to disable the plugin "System - K2"
Yup, it's the CB integration in K2 causing CB API to load too early. It also breaks CB 1.x to CB 2.x migration. I've no idea why yet, but I've a bug ticket open for both issues so hopefully can find a way to fix this.
