Is there a way to show the number of characters left message in a text area field? My issue is after the user types in their content and hits submit they get the message they have 530 or whatever amount of characters when only 500 is allowed.

No its not a stupid question.

There is nothing like this out of the box - a new ajax fieldtype would need to be developed to handle this.
