With CBSubs GPL you can configure subscription plans, merchandise plans and donation plans.
Subscription plans have a validity period (e.g., 3 month duration).
Merchandise plans have no validity as they are really a single one-time purchase.
When a subscription starts you can add subscribers to a dosman group (for example) and give them this way access to the electronic goods. When subscription expires access is revoked.
With merchandise plans you can do the same but since plan does not expire they would have access to the download area forever (so you should not use same docman group to protect future upgrades of the item you sold).
You can also attach a package (PDF) to the subscription welcoming email sent to new subscribers.
So there are multiple ways to do what you want.
