Ruling out the hosting server specifications, the question is: how many subscribers could Community Builder 1.8 (Professional) handle with Joomla 2.5.
And can it be customized to a Professional Business Community? Is there any existing live examples out there?

It can handle as many as the license you purchase can handle as well as how much load your server can handle. We've well over 400,000 registered users and we're using both CB and CBSubs here; this site is CBs biggest example. We also have a CBSubs demo site below (frontend only).
