We have educational site in russian so we always used russian translation, Russian is set as site default language in J! settings.

I've just upgraded to 2.0.4, deleted old russian language pack from CB plugins,
installed fresh one compartible with CB 2.0, but still do not see any russian
translations.

Am I missing something obvious?

I believe no.
The one I used I got from this link:
www.joomlapolis.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=att_download&link_id=1129&cf_id=34

File name is russian_cb201_utf8_rc1

Will try from your link, will report asap

Great now It works.
It the plugins list I see that "old" Russian was names 'russian' while new, working one is 'ru-RU'.
