Thanks, Nant.

I will have to set up another subdomain to experiment with, but I'm under the gun to make the site go live, so it may take a while.

I'm going to roll back to 1.7.1 (restore from backup) now just to try to get things working again.

i have a hunch that downgrading will not help you since i do not think the upgrade caused the issue to begin with ...

The upgrade may not have caused it directly: I don't know. But the site is working now that I've restored the Akeeba backup that I took just before I ran the upgrade.

I shall have to experiment with 1.7.3 some more before I try that again...
