So the front page can be used display a list (as the Home option from the Main Menu) of e.g. all Users, rather than, say, articles. This is helpful.
Can I automatically display another list e.g. most recent Users underneath that on the front page? I'm not quite expert enough to figure out if I am missing something obvious!

You can't display multiple userlists on the same page without using an iframe or something like Components Anywhere extension inside of a Joomla article.
