I have now created a public menu item link (mandatory) in the user menu but am still getting the same errors ie registered users cannot view/interact with super users so I still need to set all users to super users.

Please try and remove all your previous Joomla menus to CB (and empty trash also).

Then recreate first the Public mandatory one and test.
