How hard would it be to change the top profile module to top profiles in a particular section?

I just need a little start, thanks!

Like in Joomla's hierarchy, say if I had a menu link to articles in a particlur section or category. could the top module be set so that the top author for that category was displayed. meaning out of all the authors that submitted articles to news it shows the top one.

i am learning php and itching to do something cool for this community.

i am trying to articles pagination but i get lost.....
