Error building admin menus

I thought I'd give this one more try. Hm, should have left it alone, I guess.

When installing (or trying to) the com_comprofiler I get "Error Building Admin Menus". Everything else seems to install OK.

The server is running PHP 5.0, PHP safe is off. Has anyone actually gotten this boat anchor to work?

This error has been introduced in Joomla 1.7 (search google you will see many references and solutions).

PHP 5.0 is very old - I do not think that Joomla supports it anymore (neither does CB).

According to the documentation from Joomla, the server has to have PHP 5.0 which is the newest version. The exact version on the server is 5.2.17

well version 5.0 is not the same as version 5.2.17.

and joomla technical requirements:

www.joomla.org/technical-requirements.html

call for at least 5.2.4+ (which you are ok with now that you specified that in fact you have 5.2.17 and not 5.0).
