A Community Builder site that I look after hasn't been updated for a few months and I see the following updates are available
- Community Builder 2.4.0
- CB Activity 4.3.0
- GroupJive 3.3.0
- CB Paid Subscriptions 4.3.0
- CBSubs CB Field 4.3.0

Does it matter which order I do the updates?

Update CB then your plugins. I recommend using the Update All button in CB > Plugin Management > Install New Plugin > Install from Web. In general no the order doesn't matter too much unless the plugin isn't compatible with the current CB version which in that case it just doesn't install.

The update ran smoothly (on a test copy of the live site) and the site appears to be working OK, but GroupJive has disappeared from the menu. CBSubs is there but no GroupJive. Has it moved?

The site currently uses CB 2.2.1 and various other problems have surfaced after updating directly to CB 2.4 that suggest that we may need to update to CB 2.3 first. Is this still available?

You do not need to update to CB 2.3 first. 2.2.1 to latest is fine. Your issue is a legacy parameter was removed that was forcing plugin menu items to load. Follow the instructions in the above topic to enable plugin menus (they're now enabled by default for new installs).
