It turns out I caused another problem here - by disabling the "Rewrite URLs" I fixed the password reset, but it looks like i screwed up the CB signup... is there a happy middle ground?
Screwed up the CB signup? Disabling that functionality will prevent CB from redirecting to CBs login from Joomlas login in the event of a Joomla access denied which would normally display or redirect to Joomla login. Aside from that should have zero affect on CBs actual login or registration.
