I have set the password field to show as ***** and to be ajax editable in the profile.
When I update CB, the password field disappears and I have to set Show on Profile to Yes again.
Why? Misconfiguration/by design/bug?

Core password field is always forced off on profile view on install. I do not recommend ajax edit for core password field.

Ok, I see. Just curious, what is the reason not recommending ajax password?

Password is sensitive data. It's best to lock it behind its own page. I don't recommend using ajax on any of the core fields (username, email, and password) except maybe name. They will all work, but I don't recommend it. Core password will continue to toggle off from profile view on install though as a security feature (it's too important of a field to risk anything despite it being completely encrypted and forcing a null output on displays)
