If you were using Stripe there was a bug where if the initial recurring payment went Pending the charge webhook would change it to single payments. So if using Stripe please be sure to update CBSubs. Yes, you should be able to change it back by clicking the # under the ID column in CBSubs > Subscriptions and adjusting the following.
Autorenew Type: Mandatory (if plan requires recurring) or User-chosen (if you allow them to decide)
Autorecurring Type: Autorecurring with notifications

Actually it was a PayPal transaction, but when he renewed it it now shows up as "Recurring." Weird!
I didn't have any problems with the Stripe plugin after following your instructions.
